SUDDEN DEATH IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

SUDDEN DEATH IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

In collaboration with the Clinic San Roque we investigate the genetic causes of sudden death in the Canary Islands, which had killed 34 young people in the last 20 years.

We are studying more than 2500 people from the same family. So far there are over 35 people dead and over 200 affected. We have discovered the mutation causing Catecholaminergic tachycardia, a condition that induces severe arrhythmias and sudden death, and we have taken measures to prevent sudden death. There have been no more deaths in
treated patients . Functional studies have shown that the mutation increases the release of calcium and predisposes to arrhythmias.
