POSTTRANSLATIONAL MODIFICATIONS OF ION CHANNELS

Methylation of arginines (center) is a new posttranslational modification of the cardiac sodium channel.

We discovered arginine methylation as a new post-translational modification of the cardiac sodium channel. This is an interesting observation, as is the first evidence arginine methylation in superfamily of voltage-gated ion channels, which includes over 140 channels of calcium, potassium, and sodium. We characterized this modification, identifying enzymes that interact with the cardiac sodium channel and catalyze the methylation of arginine as well as the effect of methylation of arginine in the function of the sodium channel. Currently we are exploring whether methylation of arginine is conserved between isoforms of other sodium channel family, and if the deregulation of arginine methylation is related diseases.
